Kenya Social Hall & Kosher Kitchen
Community building
The Kenya Social Hall & Kosher Kitchen provides dedicated social, cultural and food preparation facilities for Kehillat Israel Kenya. A flexible social hall for gatherings, celebrations and education is combined with a kosher kitchen, storage and supporting facilities.
The architecture responds to the realities of construction in its local context. A straightforward masonry structure and timber roof provide a robust, buildable solution, while corrugated roof sheeting sheds rainwater towards the surrounding landscape and growing areas. High-level openings and regularly spaced windows bring natural light and ventilation into the principal spaces.
The project has progressed from drawings and three-dimensional design into construction, with the masonry walls and timber roof showing the design being realised through locally available methods.
