Senegal Elementary School
International architecture competition
The Senegal Elementary School was developed for the Archstorming international architecture competition, responding to the need for sustainable and accessible educational infrastructure in Marsassoum, Senegal. The scheme was selected as a finalist in the 2020 competition.
The school is organised around a central courtyard, creating a protected communal heart that connects the classrooms, library, offices and supporting facilities, with natural light and ventilation to every classroom.
The concept explores locally available, recycled and low-impact materials, including earth-based walls, bamboo structure and reused tyres. Passive ventilation, daylighting, generous roof overhangs and rainwater harvesting respond to the climate, while water management, recycling, composting and growing areas make sustainability part of the children’s everyday learning.
The project was featured by RIBA Future Architects in 2021.
