Neurodiversity-Led Home Adaptation
Inclusive design, extension & alterations
The sensitive adaptation and extension of a family home to provide a more supportive environment for a neurodivergent child. At the centre of the brief was a dedicated bedroom and personal space, with roof glazing for natural light, integrated storage and a reorganised first floor.
The project shows how accessibility in housing can extend beyond physical mobility, considering personal space, predictable organisation, daylight and separation from busier shared areas, without isolating the child from the household.
A first-floor side extension and significant internal alterations evolved through several planning submissions. Following consultation with the planning and highways authorities, the scheme added a parking space supported by a vehicle swept-path analysis.
KOA’s involvement extended from feasibility through planning, highways coordination, Building Regulations, technical detailing and construction-stage revisions.
