Residential alteration

A carefully considered alteration to a detached home, designed to strengthen the relationship between the first-floor living space and its landscaped surroundings. The client wanted a greater sense of openness, daylight and connection with nature as part of supporting her wellbeing.

The existing first-floor windows were replaced with wider glazed bi-folding doors and a contemporary glazed Juliet balcony. The intervention is deliberately restrained: the new opening follows the proportions of the windows below, and the steel-and-glass balustrade references an existing one elsewhere on the house.

KOA prepared the proposal, planning drawings and Design & Access Statement, addressing appearance, neighbouring amenity and the Green Belt location. Planning permission was granted, with the Council finding the proposal appropriate development within the Green Belt.
